As a young boy Bellman kills the wrong bird, a act that he will regret and that will haunt him all his life. Set in the mid 19th century, a prominent family that owns a textile mill, a mill that Bellman will eventually inherit., a man in black (no he is not an alien) and many losses.
This is a Gothic novel that creates an atmosphere of dread, with some outstanding and strong writing. The reader learns quite a bit about rooks, rooks never forget, and in this novel they represent doom and gloom whenever and to whoever they appear. The extensive detail about the working of each facet of the textile mill serves to derail the tension created and takes the focus off the main thread of the story.
It is a tale about a man that is haunted all his life by past deeds. what he makes of that life and what he will do to save the only thing he has left. I enjoyed much about this novel, it was a good and totally different type of read from this author's first. Well done all the same.
