The Lover

The Lover - Marguerite Duras, Barbara Bray

There is something dark, distressing and desperate, yet melancholic in this novella. Emotions simmering beneath the lines, beautiful, in your face, matter of fact and spare prose as a seventy yr. old woman looks back on her first love affair when she is fifteen and he is much older. This takes place in IndoChina in the twenties and her lover is Chinese, she is French and both are outcasts in these waning days of French rule. Such poignancy as she remembers and relives this short time in her life.
